Vitus Pro Mark McNally (An Post – Chain Reaction) completed a momentous week in the Friends Life Tour of Britain in London , surviving a final stage brush with the tarmac to claim the SKODA King of the Mountains jersey.

It was probably a combination of good legs and good luck but we deliberately went out in the first three days to make the break and build up a bit of a lead. The An Post Chain Reaction rider started the race on home roads in Liverpool, enough of a meaningful occasion in itself, but McNally then jumped into the day’s break, taking the SKODA King of the Mountains jersey after day one.

Getting into the right moves on the following stages then built up a healthy lead in the classification for the 25-year-old, who first rode the race in 2009.After clinching points on the SKODA King of the Mountains climb on Beachy Head on Stage Seven, McNally was assured of the jersey providing he finished in London.

“It was probably a combination of good legs and good luck but we deliberately went out in the first three days to make the break and build up a bit of a lead. After that it was a case of trying to consolidate and it worked out well. We came here for the breaks, we got in a few and it worked well for us. It was the only way we could make an impact”
