Vitus-sponsored athlete Matti Adair rode at the fifth round of the Ulster Cyclocross Champs in Ormeau Park, Belfast, over the weekend, finishing in second place.

Here’s Matti’s report:

“This weekend was the Ulster Cyclocross Champs and having taken a break from racing I was feeling good and looking forward to it.

Having done a few practice laps the course was very slippery but also fast as it was mostly dry. The race started well and I took the lead into the first section of off-road. I was out in front for the first half lap until Rodger Aiken came flying past – which has become a familiar sight this season and like every over time I couldn’t stay with him, but I did keep him closer for longer than previous times.

After a few laps I was in second place with An Post pro rider Conor McConvey closing down on me. Conor came shooting past but I managed to stay with him for a while until he finally left me. By this time I was in third with a gap of 30-40 seconds over fourth, so I continued to push hard and tried to increase the gap.

Coming through the start-finish line with three laps to go Conor was standing having rolled a tub, so I was up into second. With three laps to go and a good gap over third place it was looking good, however, one lap later I crashed hard on a slippy section and lost time. With only one lap to go I kept my second place.

So it was a good race for me and I’m looking forward to the next one."
